Cough & cold

Colds – the disease that most often affects us

Adults get a cold once or twice a year, while children under seven get a cold 7 to 9 times a year (www.nhi.no). Colds are caused by viruses that attack the nose and throat. In half of the cases the cause is a so-called rhinovirus. Among the virus types, there are hundreds of subtypes. About 6 out of 10 infected with a virus get sick. The transmission of infection is mostly through hand-to-hand contact with other persons and subsequent transmission of the virus to the nostrils or eyes, or as a infection by coughing and sneezing. The incubation period, the time from which you are infected to getting sick, is usually 2-4 days.
The course of the disease often begins with:

  • sore throat
  • sneezing and runny nose
  • headaches and chills are also common

Young children can have a fever. Gradually, the mucous membrane of the nose swells up and the lace becomes thick and yellowish-green. The symptoms are like flu, but with the flu you get sick faster, get a fever and feel in far worse shape. (www.nhi.no).
